Shield Finished

I finally have my shield finished! Martin McAree of Legion Ireland did the leather rim over a rope to protect the sides and also riveted the boss to the shield itself putting washers on the back to hold it firmly in place (Thanks Martin!). Unfortunately I didnt get a chance to take a picture of it untouched as I used this weekend in Lough Gurs reenactment and as you can see the boss and leather got some hammering from combat, I prefer a well used look to shields anyway, hopefully this is the first of many such hammerings it will get.

Thanks Niamh! The designs are from Iron age finds, The front design is based of a disc from Anlore, Co. Monaghan and the back is from bone flakes from Lough Crew so I cant take credit for them. Tho the round shield is a bit of fiction, there were ones from the bronze age and early middle ages and from other cultures in the iron age so I just invented a little. Only one shield found in Ireland from the iron age and it would be a pain in the A to do, would like to some day tho.

I cant seem to find the place to comment on ur blog, love the dress by the way! Thats truly beautiful. And also I think I know some people that went to the Duncannon show, namely pajo, bec, sean, mel and Jess, not sure if they went to that one but I have heard them talk about it before.
