10 Artists Exhibition

Exhibiting in Art on the Rails, 27th August, Kilmainham, Dublin

I will be exhibiting my work along with 40 other artists in the Kilmainham Arts festival on Saturday the 27th of August. Our work will be shown outside Kilmainham Prison in Dublin from 11am to 6 pm. Shield Finished

I finally have my shield finished! Martin McAree of Legion Ireland did the leather rim over a rope to protect the sides and also riveted the boss to the shield itself putting washers on the back to hold it firmly in place (Thanks Martin!). Unfortunately I didnt get a chance to take a picture of it untouched as I used this weekend in Lough Gurs reenactment and as you can see the boss and leather got some hammering from combat, I prefer a well used look to shields anyway, hopefully this is the first of many such hammerings it will get.

More pages from the 3d Comic I did for my masters, yesterday I posted more (found here). Part of the storyline of the comic was a section of Irish mythology called Dinnschenchas or lore of the land. Where the story is partly inspired by the land but also alive within the landscape itself, waiting to be drawn out by the storyteller. In other words the land isnt just part of the story, it tells the story too, is inseperable from the story.

My 3D version of a spearhead found in Roodstown, ardee, co. louth, of Iron Age date. Made from Iron, its leaf shaped with a thin angular midrib.

The above was made completely in zbrush, I have been working over the last while to learn to do everything 3D just in zbrush. Above was a test render of a spearhead, its based on a reinactment spear I own, tho I changed it somewhat to make it look more like iron.

Fear Dearg, pronounced Far Darrig, translated as red man, is an Irish fairy, who is mischievous and a bit of an all round pain in the arse. But relatively harmless and quite nice if treated with respect.

Title: Achilles Born

Story:

Thetis, Achilles mother brings him to the River styx and dips him in the water so he is invulnerable, the only part that is not submerged is his foot which Thetis holds onto, this causes his one weakness his heel. This image shows the birth and transformation of the legend that is the Hero Achilles.

Idealism & Realism

This was from my last college project where I explored Realism & Idealism in digital sculpture with a background of traditional sculpture. This was tied to my dissertation/thesis in the year where I studied the differences between digital and traditional sculpture.

Idealism

I choose a Greek bust as I was reading about Greek sculpture at the time and was really interested in the Idealism of the Greeks. I used a Greek sculpture in the British museum as my main source but also borrowed certain things from late Archaic, early classical Greek sculptures for things like the eye, nose and lips. The base mesh was made in 3ds max which as you can see below was very basic and all the rest of the work was done in zbrush.

Realism:

For this one I wanted to explore anger and realism. So in the making of this sculpture, I used my own anatomical knowledge, looked at sculptures in the British Museum and Crawford Art Gallery in Cork and finally looked over anatomical books and photographs of models to get various additions to the realism like placement of veins. I also used traditional media in the making of this project, drawing the body and the face trying to get the right pose and expression for anger:

Finally before I made anything in zbrush, I made a few small clay sculpts of heads which served as a preliminary roughing out of anger.

This was my first attempt at using clay. I used a picture of girl sitting from 3d.sk but also made alot of changes according to my own anatomical knowledge and emphasised some things like her scapula as my own idealistic touch. I kept things simple avoiding too much detailing as this was my first try at using this medium, though as you can see I never got around to working on the arms.

I made this phone for the D&AD awards, the product design section. I first created a model of my own phone to see how I would go about making a phone like this as I hadnt done something like this before:

I did this while the concept artist (Richard Smythe) was designing the phone, here is the concept he created :

And finally then made an open version of the phone and worked on the materials and rendering, which ended up looking like the first images in this post.
